You Have My Back. Right, Sarge?

You Have My Back. Right, Sarge?

February 23, 2022 | 911media

I want to take this month’s article to talk about the level of support from a first-line supervisor, and how I have witnessed a downward trend of outward support from sergeants when it matters the most. I am going to make up a fictional scenario, but potentially one that many of you may have experienced. Officer A goes on a call for service. Upon arrival, the officer is confronted with a scenario that requires the officer to use some form of force. Maybe it is just hand-to-hand striking or, in the most extreme of cases, the use of deadly force. Read More

Don’t Be a Richard! — The Dirty Dozen, Part 2

Don’t Be a Richard! — The Dirty Dozen, Part 2

February 23, 2022 | 911media

As many of you know, we typically don’t use names in our articles, even though most of you know who we are talking about due to the internal rumor mill. So for the sake of this article, I will refer to the main person as “Richard.” Many of you read and responded to my email regarding callback pay and asked why some officers are not seeing the overtime worked at CCDC being added to their retirement accounts when it meets NRS 286. Convention Center and the Strip

Convention Center and the Strip

February 23, 2022 | 911media

Policing and keeping safe the Las Vegas Strip clearly come with many unique challenges. The Strip is known as one of the world’s adult playgrounds, and now with the success of major sporting events, it is morphing into the sports and entertainment capital of the world. Convention Center Area Command is staffed differently to fulfill this unique requirement of making tourists feel safe and ensuring officers are highly visible on the Strip. CCAC is staffed with roughly 220 officers and detectives to handle this daunting task. Read More

It Is Smart to Be Prepared

It Is Smart to Be Prepared

February 23, 2022 | 911media

It is always a good idea to plan for the future or the inevitable. Over the past few months, I have seen a large number of officers retiring and moving on to other endeavors. The key to any move is preparation. How many of us can honestly say we are prepared for an emergency or a change in our current working status? When I began this job 22 years ago, I was fortunate to have a co-worker who had about 18 years on the Department. Read More

We Need to Have Each Other’s Backs

We Need to Have Each Other’s Backs

February 23, 2022 | 911media

What does the phrase “thin blue line” mean to you? The origin of the phrase dates back to an 1854 battle during the Crimean War, in which a British infantry regiment, in red uniforms, stood its ground against a Russian cavalry charge. The British formation became known as the “thin red line.” This phrase was later repurposed by Los Angeles Police Chief Bill Parker, who referred to his department, the LAPD, as the “thin blue line.” Read More

Legislative Preview and Upcoming Election Season

Legislative Preview and Upcoming Election Season

February 23, 2022 | 911media

2022 is set to be a busy year, with midterm elections and preparations for the 2023 legislative session. If the tea leaves are correct, conservatives are set to make some big moves due to the liberals’ anti-police policies and pandemic fatigue. As always, the LVPPA will be at the forefront of these issues fighting for officers and our rights. Read More

Take an Alternate Route

Take an Alternate Route

February 23, 2022 | 911media

New York Police Department Officers Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora were murdered while investigating a domestic violence incident at an apartment in Harlem. Officer Rivera was just 22 years old and had been a cop for less than a year and a half. Officer Mora was 27 years old and had been a cop for four years. On January 28, thousands of NYPD officers lined the streets of lower Manhattan to pay respect to Officer Rivera. Read More
