Understanding LVPPA Membership and What We Do

Understanding LVPPA Membership and What We Do

September 1, 2024 | President Steve Grammas

In the realm of law enforcement in the state of Nevada, the LVPPA plays a significant role in advocating for our officers’ rights, negotiating labor agreements and shaping workplace policies. Membership in the PPA offers our officers a collective voice, protection against unfair treatment and a platform to address grievances. The PPA is also extremely active in the political space, as we have in-depth discussions with legislators and even the governor on issues affecting our officers both at work and in their personal lives. The Mental Rewards of Hard Work: How Dedication Fuels Growth

The Mental Rewards of Hard Work: How Dedication Fuels Growth

September 1, 2024 | Vice President Scott Nicholas

In a world often focused on quick wins and instant gratification, the value of hard work can sometimes be overlooked. Yet, the mental benefits of putting in sustained effort and dedication are profound and multifaceted. While the tangible outcomes of hard work — like achieving goals or receiving promotions — are often celebrated, the psychological rewards are equally significant and deeply transformative. Read More

Member Benefits

Member Benefits

September 1, 2024 | Sergeant-at-Arms Bryan Yant

The PPA is always looking for ways to interact, engage and give back to our members through our various events and member benefits. The Sports and Education Donation is one benefit that many officers are unaware of. This benefit can be utilized for any organized team activity, sport, league or event that you or your child may be enrolled in. The donation is a once-per-calendar-year donation of $100 that can be used to offset fees, equipment, etc., for the member. If you have multiple sports or children enrolled in sports, you are only eligible for one donation. The PPA has 12 eligible donation slots available each month, and the donation is only available to active members. Read More

Mentorship in Policing: Bridging the Gap for New Officers

Mentorship in Policing: Bridging the Gap for New Officers

September 1, 2024 | Director of Corrections Myron Hamm

When my son was in elementary and middle school, I had reasonable expectations of him. These were his formative years, and I was careful to ensure that I laid a foundation that would benefit him when he reached his teenage and high school years. My rules and expectations were reasonable, and I always ensured I was there to guide and help him if need be. Now that he has reached the high school and teenage phase of his life, my expectations have not changed, but his ability to carry out tasks and think have grown with him. He has spent years with me to get to this point, and now, I am confident that he will make good decisions. Read More

Deferred Compensation for 2024

Deferred Compensation for 2024

September 1, 2024 | Treasurer Daniel Coyne

Contributing to your deferred compensation can seem difficult to do and isn’t very exciting in the short term, but if you start early, it pays off in retirement. For many of us, as soon as we get our savings built up, we go out and splurge, buying that new car or gun that we’ve had our eyes on. This is something I have been guilty of in the past. However, there is one easy way available for us to save money without having the temptation of spending it right away. This option is your deferred compensation plan. With every year comes new changes to the contribution limits of your deferred compensation plan. Read More

The Role of Police Union Lobbyists in State Politics

September 1, 2024 | Director of Governmental Affairs John Abel

In the intricate web of state politics, various interest groups and organizations strive to influence legislation and policy decisions. Among these, police unions and their lobbyists play a significant role, advocating for the rights and interests of law enforcement personnel. Understanding the importance of police union lobbyists in state politics requires an exploration of their functions, the impact they have on policy-making, and the broader implications for governance and public safety. How LEAF Supports the Families of Nevada’s Bravest

How LEAF Supports the Families of Nevada’s Bravest

September 1, 2024 | Officer Greg Stinnett

The Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (LEAF) is the LVPPA’s charity that affords us the ability to assist the family members of member officers who die in the line of duty. We are there for birthdays, Christmases and graduations. The LEAF charity also ensures the children and surviving spouse receive a college education. In addition to our own members funding LEAF through payroll deductions, donations by citizens and groups have a tremendous impact on our ability to sustain the program.

Your Health and Safety Is a Priority

Your Health and Safety Is a Priority

September 1, 2024 | Director Robert Glowinski

We face a unique set of challenges and risks in our line of work. Sometimes, this involves being involved in car wrecks and using physical force. Even though we are trained to handle high-pressure situations, you shouldn’t neglect prioritizing your own health and safety after these events. Don’t be afraid to seek medical attention from second responders, the fire department or a hospital. If you are willing to request medical attention for a suspect, why wouldn’t you request it for yourself? Even if you feel physically fine after an incident, you should not assume you are uninjured.
