Patrol Briefing Topics
The LVPPA Executive Board attended area command briefings to discuss important topics and trends that we have been seeing. We aim to keep the membership updated with the most current and accurate information. If you are not receiving emails from the PPA, please contact our office so we can ensure your information is accurate in the system.
Speeding has been one of the biggest topics to date. It's imperative that we watch our speeds. Police Officers drive more than most professions, which makes us proficient – or at least we think we are – but that still means we must drive safely. The Department can track your speeds through GPS. It's important to remember to drive within our limits, especially when rolling code and during pursuits. Vehicle accidents are going to happen; it's just the nature of the beast. What doesn't help is when officers are driving too fast or beyond their ability levels. The way we drive will affect how an event is perceived after the fact. We tell officers all the time: The same people you are trying to help will be the same people who will complain in an effort to get you fired.
Truthfulness in CAD is always on our list of topics. Remember, CAD is an official document, and it's extremely important to make sure you are where you are supposed to be. Updating CAD is also extremely important. Sometimes, a call for service doesn't result in any type of formal documentation, such as a police report. It's important to update CAD, because should a complaint arise, one of the first places IAB will look is CAD.
Please make sure your Department cell phone is used only for official business. You have no expectation of privacy when it comes to your Department phone. The Department will be able to find anything on that phone. With that being said, please be careful and limit your use of your personal phone while on duty as well. There have been cases in which an officer's personal cell phone has become a part of court proceedings.
Before we know it, we will be closing out 2026. The year 2027 brings us into contract negotiations and the legislative session in Carson City. Let us know if you wish to participate on the contract negotiation team.
