LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A police motorcade helped transfer a Las Vegas police officer from a local hospital Wednesday morning.
The procession of officers led the ambulance transporting Shay Mikalonis from UMC to McCarran International Airport so he could be taken to an out-of-state rehabilitation facility.
Mikalonis was shot and gravely wounded while responding to a protest on the Las Vegas Strip last month.
Since then, he’s undergone jaw surgery, and he is on a ventilator and expected to remain paralyzed from the neck down.
The suspect, Edgar Samaniego, is accused of shooting Mikalonis while staying at a motel near Circus Circus.
Samaniego’s attorney said the shooting appeared to be reckless and unplanned.
